Pilates
Pilates is a mix of floor and equipment-based exercises designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the whole body, but can assist greatly with rehabilitation of specific injuries. It's a combination of techniques from a number of disciplines - including yoga, self defence and dance - creating a mind-body control approach that aims to increase core strength and balance, as well as general fitness and well-being.
As it doesn't involve an explosive release of energy, bulky weights or pouring sweat, and requires no specialist clothing, Pilates appeals to those after a quieter approach to all-over body strength and well-being.
Athletes find the Pilates emphasis on core body strength adds a missing aspect to their training regime. Pilates offers a more specific work-out that complements any gym or other exercise programme.

Brief Pilates History
Pilates, developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900's, was initially used for the rehabilitation of war veterans. It was later modified and used as a rehabilitation tool for ballet dancers. While initially using floor exercises that used the body as a resistance tool, Joseph Pilates invented and refined equipment designed to offer further spring resistance.
Since the 1970s, Pilates' international popularity has exploded. The Back In Motion team have modified Pilates to include exercise and rehabilitation programmes for everyone.
